When we redid our kitchen a year or so ago I knew one thing I wanted to do was to install real wood floors in our house. While real wood is more expensive then it’s engineered counterparts, I just love the look of solid wood and how it lasts over time. I wanted a nice dark color floor even though I heard darker floors were harder to keep clean. I didn’t really believe it until they were installed and then I KNEW what they meant! Every little piece of dog hair and crumb from my kids that landed on my floors was visible. It was making me crazy, until I figured out a simple and easy way to keep them clean and looking like new: my Swiffer tools! If you are wood floors, these tips & tricks for keeping wood floors looking like new will be a life saver for you- especially if you have kids!
I just love how my wood floors look, and want others to see them how I see them, which means I need to clean them- often. Unfortunately with three kids and a dog my floors don’t always look that great. In fact, they very quickly can look like junk. Kind of like this:
YUCK! This is just me being real. It’s hard to keep them clean, especially in summer when we are home more often. Every time they run in and out with their wet and dirty feet, all of that dirt gets dragged in onto my floors. Every time the dog WALKS she’s dropping dog hair all over the place. It’s terrible! Thankfully with these tips and tricks, I can make my floors look beautiful again, quickly and easily!
Do Your Research
Not all wood floors are created equal and the products you use depend on the floor’s finish. Check all of the labels and be sure you are using the right cleaner for your type of floor. Swiffer products are safe to use on all finished floors but not for unfinished, oiled or waxed wood, so be sure to check out what you have first!
Be sure to prevent scrapes and scratches by using felt protectors under your furniture. Also, rugs can be scattered around, epically near doorways, to help collect dirt and prevent it from coming into your house! In addition, be sure to take OFF heels or cleats before you come inside!
For the long haul
Every 3-5 years you should look into adding a maintenance coat to keep them in tip top shape. Look into the details about your specific style of floor to see exactly what you should be doing to keep your floors looking their best. Gaps are a normal thing that may happen in your wood floors with the changes in weather and humidity. To help keep it more mellow, try to keep the humidity levels in your home regular. Check every year to see if there’s any MAJOR gaps or problem areas from the changes, so you can fix it before it gets worse.
At least once a week, but honestly I’d recommend sweeping every day if you have kids and pets! If you stick to this routine, you can clean your floors before dirt has time to collect on the surface. To make it easy, you will want to use the right tool. Unlike carpeting that collects allergens and keeps them around, hardwood floors can be easily wiped clean of dust and allergens. That’s why I like to use my Swiffer Sweeper to help remove pollen from my floors quickly and easily.
Take that Sweep to the next level
No time for that pesky broom and dust pan? Yea me either! This is why I love, love, LOVE my Swiffer SweeperVac. It works twice as fast as a broom and picks up all that dog hair and dust in one motion. I use mine every day. Sometimes more than once.
Clean up spills right way
Leaving a bunch a juice or milk on the floor is never a good idea, and with wood it’s downright terrible. Keep some microfiber cloths handy to quickly clean up spills in-between mops.
WetJet, Don’t Wet Mop
When it’s time to mop, which I try and do at least every week in my house, I love to use my WetJet to clean up dirt and grime quickly without a giant mop bucket following me around! Wet mopping can damage your floors and definitely takes more time anyways, so ditch the bucket and use your WetJet. With the specially designed wood floor cleaner, you will be clean floors in a jiffy and can just toss the dirty pad in the trash. It works to absorb and lock in dirt and is safe to use on all finished wooden floors.
Get rid of scuffs
Banish scuffs quickly and naturally by using a tennis ball! Just rub it on the scuff and watch it disappear! You can also use a stain marker to get rid of them as well.
With these tips and tricks, your wooden floors can look like new for years and years! It can be hard to imagine that with kids, but it is possible- all with the help of Swiffer products!
