BOO! If you like decorating for Halloween, but would rather do it on the cheap, I have the perfect craft for you! I’ve been on a man jar decorating kick lately and wanted to turn a few into something for halloween. These spooky mason jar mummies take literally 10 minutes to make and will be a perfect part of your halloween decor!
To make these little guys, you’ll only need a few things:
mason jars
gauze
scissors
mod podge
goolily eyes
foam brush
Cut your gauze into strips. They don’t have to be perfect by any means. I did approximately 1 1/2 in strips (I didn’t measure!)
Cover your jar with a thin coat of mod podge and then begin layering the gauze on top. I covered the whole jar with one coat of the gauze and then began the second”bumpy” coat.
After my first coat, I glued the eyes on with some glue, and then to make the mummy more 3D, use more mod podge and stick more strips on top, bending, folding and twisting them so they have that rustic 3D feel. I used mod podge under each strip and some more on top to be sure it stuck down.
Set it down to dry, I let mine dry overnight, but I think it as dry earlier than that.
Last, place the top ring on each jar and place a tea light candle in each and you are done! If you don’t have a long candle lighter, you can place some beans or noodles in the bottom so the candle is higher to the top so you can reach with a match. You can use a votive, but remember it will completely melt to the bottom and then it will be harder to place another candle in it later.
Aren’t these so cute?? You can place the eyes any way you want and even give them eyebrows if you want a “mad” mummy. My kids love them and they look great lit and not lit.
What do you think of my mummies? Would you make some?
These are so cute! I really feel like we should make some of these over this coming weekend!
This is so simple yet so creative. Love this idea.
I think they are adorable. Cute way to reuse the jar from a jar candle you may have finished. You can also use a piece of uncooked spaghetti as a “long match” to reach down inside. So cute!
These are so cute! They look really easy to make, too!
