The job of a mama comes with a very long list of duties and roles. It is a never-ending list and I’ll admit, some days I feel accomplished that I just kept the kids alive! Between sports, school, clubs and trying to fit in family time I feel like the struggle is ALWAYS real. And while my roles vary day to day from importance levels, I do have a few priorities that are on the top of my list. One example of this is the importance of teaching my kids to prepare healthy foods for themselves. As my kids have gotten older, I have been beginning to teach them how to help prepare and create healthy meals. A great place to start is to give them some simple breakfast choices for busy mornings that are easy to prepare, delicious and healthy!
Having three kids playing four sports, time is a precious thing. Honestly I feel most days we are out running around from place to place more than we are actually home! Feeding my kids during these busy seasons can be tricky. That doesn’t mean I want to reach for the crappy food in a box. I still try my best to show my kids how important it is to fill our bodies with fresh, natural, from-the-earth foods. We recently planted our first garden as well to further help teach our kids how to be apart of growing and eating natural foods.
Breakfast is definitely the most important meal of the day, and often a hectic one. Busy morning routines, juggling multiple backpacks, assignments and outfit choices can make you just want to reach for the box of cereal and call it a day- which is fine sometimes, but other times I want to be sure my kids head off for their full day of learning and fun with bellies full of healthy, natural foods bursting with nutrients and vitamins that will keep them fuller longer and prepare their brains for the day.
While I personally like to limit the carbs I consume (thanks to my over 30’s metabolism!) I feel like they are a must when preparing meals for my little skinny kids, especially at breakfast time! These whole grain carbs will help keep my kids little bellies fuller, longer and give them the energy they need to be their best. Like most kids, mine all love meals that include things they can dip or spread on top, which is why I love to have some delicious Arla Cream Cheeses available for breakfast time.
Arla Foods is the fifth-largest dairy company in the world, a cooperative owned by more than 12,500 dairy farmers. Arla combines traditional craftsmanship and world-class technologies to ensure its products remain closer to nature, from farm to fridge- and what’s more important than that! Arla recently launches a #LiveUnprocessed campaign promoting the importance serving and eating foods that are as close to nature as possible. For this campaign, Arla asked a group of children to imagine and draw ingredients that are commonly found in dairy products, like Xanthan, rBST and Sorbic Acid. What did they come up with? Monsters. Ironic, right? These common ingredients that ARE totally scary and shouldn’t be in our foods and yet our foods are full of them! I was interested to see what my youngest daughter imagined when I said “draw Sorbic Acid” and here is what she drew:
Yikes! A giant pot of boiling green acid. Not quite what I want in my cheese. Obviously these are ingredients we try to avoid and that’s why I love to support companies like Arla that are producing foods that are healthy, nutritions and flavorful- all while being as close to nature as possible!
I love that Arla cheeses are made with no artificial additives, no ingredients that you can’t pronounce and no ingredients that sound confusing or in any way like a made-up word. They have no artificial growth hormones like rBST* and no artificial preservatives. They are truly a great addition to any healthy breakfast!
Some simple breakfast choices in our house are:
- whole grain bagel with Arla blueberry cream cheese
- fresh cinnamon toast with Arla plain cream cheese
- whole grain toast with Arla sliced cheese and avocado
- Fresh fruit smoothie with toast
- Fresh banana bread and Arla cream cheese
- Quick one egg and cheese breakfast sandwich
Easy right? Just add in some fresh fruit choices (think SIMPLE like a banana, apple, clementine or berries!) and a glass of milk and you have a balanced breakfast for the whole family that was easy to make and quick to eat.

So even during those hectic sports seasons, be sure to take some time to be together and eat as a family- even if it’s just a quick breakfast. It’s been said many times (and I truly believe this!) that kids who grow up eating family meals together mature into adults that are more well rounded and also eat healthier. Family is so important and so is setting a good example on what’s good to fill your bodies with and what not to. Arla is one of those companies that promotes and creates good choices for your family, so be sure to look for it the next time you are shopping!
