As my kids keep growing, my worry list tends to morph and change. No longer am I concerned about them being potty trained, getting along well with others or sleeping through the night- but now I worry about social media, when it’s ok to be out on their own and getting hurt in soccer games. While I don’t consider myself an over-worrier or helicopter parent, I do like to be cautious and prepared though- especially when it comes to my children’s health! Every day I am so thankful that I have healthy and happy children, but I know that can disappear in a blink of an eye, which is why it’s so important to me to be proactive in my children’s health care. Today I want to share some of my tips on keeping my mom worries in check so that I can continue being MOM and not just Mom the worrier.
To me the most important part of being a parent is being PREPARED. Prepared for what? Everything! Spills. Cuts. Accidents. Running out of toilet paper- you name it! One of the ways that helps keep my worries in check is staying proactive in my kid’s health care. We never miss a well check, teeth cleaning or eye check. Staying up to date on appointments and vaccines is one of the best ways to try and prevent any illnesses- but of course we all know that surprises and accidents happen. When that’s the case I am even more prepared with a plan, and it’s thankfully one that hundreds of people trust and one that is top ranked in the US: CHOP!
What is CHOP? CHOP is The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and is the best of the best. This hospital is one of the best in the US and is located in the heart of Philadelphia. But CHOP isn’t just a hospital, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is a fast growing network of facilities and resources that are created to provide exceptional healthcare services to all children, for every possible need. Whether it’s a bump on the head, a broken bone, outpatient surgery, asthma or allergies concerns, or homecare, CHOP is the best place to turn. The top experts at CHOP treat all of the common conditions of childhood, and offer that regular well care that’s so important to stay proactive about!
What I love about the CHOP Care Network is that that it offers many locations, not only in the Philly area, but also out east and south like in the King of Prussia area and even out to Pottstown and Lancaster! CHOP has their main hospital but also offers regular pediatric care, after hour urgent care centers, and outpatient surgery. In fact, there are over 50 locations in total that provide primary care, specialty care, outpatient surgery and urgent care, as well as community hospital partnerships – which makes it so much easier for parents like me to have access to the right care in the right place for us- and without having to drive into the city!
Within the CHOP Care Network, you can have access to:
- CHOP PRIMARY CARE: CHOP Primary Care practices, which are located all throughout southeastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey, provide convenient access to primary health and wellness services for children close to home for everyday well checks or general concerns.
- CHOP SPECIALTY CARE AND SURGERY CENTERS: No matter where you live in Southeastern Pennsylvania or New Jersey, there probably is a Specialty Care and Ambulatory Surgery Centers near you. These are closer to home and convenient for care for all types of special medical conditions.
- AFTER-HOURS URGENT CARE : From night time mysterious belly aches to broken bones or scrapes, sometimes kids need doctors after “office” hours. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Urgent Care offers fast, convenient care for children from babies to teens, from a professionally trained team of board-certified CHOP pediatricians and pediatric nurses. There are also onsite X-ray and lab services available too.
- HOME CARE: If you have a seriously ill or injured child, sometimes the constant after care can be difficult for parents. In those situations, CHOP offers home care for kids. The Home Care program offers a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, social workers, dieticians and delivery technicians and others who coordinate home visits, infusion therapy and medical equipment for thousands of area children.
So as my kids grow and change, I continue to keep their general health a priority and can truly rest easy knowing that no matter what comes down the pipe, my children have access to some of the best and top rated health care services right in out backyard. I know I can’t completely prevent my kids being hurt or getting sick, but I can ease my worrying by having a plan in place for if accidents do happen. If you live in the Philadelphia region, be sure to learn more about the CHOP care network by checking out their website and on Facebook or twitter!
