Total time:
Serves: 12 servings
  • 1 cup warm water (lukewarm to the touch)
  • 2¼ t (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1½ t salt
  • 3 T honey
  • 2½ c white whole wheat flour
  • 1 T extra-virgin olive oil
  • 3 T cornmeal (for pan)
  1. To make the dough:
  2. Add your warm water to the bowl of a stand mixer with the dough attachment, and sprinkle the yeast inside. Give the yeast a quick stir to mix it in with the water and then let it sit for 10 minutes until the yeast is foamy.
  3. With the mixer on a low speed, gradually add the flour and then the honey, olive oil and salt. Increase speed to medium-low, and continue mixing the dough for 5 minutes.
  4. Remove dough from the mixing bowl, and use your hands to shape it into a ball. Grease the mixing bowl with a little bit of olive oil or non stick cook spray, then place the dough ball back in the bowl and cover it with a damp towel. Place the dough in a warm location and let it rise for 40-45 minutes until the dough has nearly doubled in size.
  5. Once it's ready, place the dough onto a floured surface, and it into a 12- to 14-inch round for a thick-crusted pizza, or divide it into smaller pieces for individual pizzas.
  6. Sprinkle a baking sheet evenly with the cornmeal, then place the dough on the baking sheet.
  7. For the pizza:
  8. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
  9. Top the dough with your desired sauce and toppings and brush the crust with a few teaspoons of melted butter.
  10. For thick crust, bake for 16-18 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the toppings are melted and cooked. For smaller pizzas, bake for 14-16 minutes.
