Do your kids love Despicable Me as much as mine do?? My kids were dying to be minions this year for Halloween so I decided to give it a shot. This costume was fairly easy to make and cost me around $12 for each one, and it would cost you even less if you had blue pants or a yellow shirt (we had neither).
Materials:
blue pants
3/4 yard blue fleece
yellow shirt
blue felt
white felt
yellow hat
black pipe cleaners
two paper cups
tin foil
black marker
elastic strip (like the ones used in pants at the waist)
hot glue
Step one: Make the Logo
Ok, I could NOT find a template for the Minion logo, so I ended up free drawing it on white and then gluing it on a blue circle with the hot glue.
Step two: Make the eyes
Take two paper or Styrofoam cups and cut it down so only about an inch is remaining. Glue tin foil on the outside (I just used regular glue) and draw two black dots for the centers.
Step Three: Make the hats (hair)
I couldn’t find big kid hats in yellow but ended up finding hats in the baby section but they fit! It was a speck small for my 7 year old, but it was only for one night so it worked. To make the hair, cut black pipe cleaners and stick them through the top. I didn’t glue them.
Step Four: Make the goggles
I did these two different ways- for my son, who’s head is a bit smaller, I hot glued the eyes right onto the hat and also the elastic strap. I made it about 2 inches larger for more room.
For my daughter, who’s head is a bit bigger (and since I couldn’t find the bigger sized hats) I measured her head and sewed the elastic in a circle and then glued the eyes to the strap, then she wore the hat and the goggles as a separate piece.
Step Five: Make the overalls
I measured the kids from the waist, over their shoulder to the other side of their waist to see how long to cut the straps. I cut the overall shape with the straps out of the felt (add a few extra inches to the straps, just in case)
Step Sic: Put it all together!
Since I wanted to be able to reuse the shirt and pants, I just safety pinned the “overall” portion to the pants. I couldn’t find long sleeved yellow shirts so I just put black long sleeved shirts under them. The put on their hats and goggles and you are good to go!
Pretty cute, huh? They were simple to do and VERY popular as we trick-or-treated this year! These would be fun for a birthday party too!
Happy Crafting!
Adorable! Love the DIY idea. I can’t wait to meet my little one and make fun outfits like these 🙂
