Thank you to Kohl’s for sponsoring this discussing today! I was paid and received free camping products in exchange for my honest review. As always, 100% of the opinions are my own.
Have you taken your kids camping? Going camping is such a fun vacation for kids and a great way for everyone to get back to nature and get some much needed unplugged time. Camping is something that has been on my mine and my husband’s “parenting bucket list” for quite some time. We had been wanting to take the kids, but with three of them, that can be a daunting task! We quickly realized though that with a little planning and the right gear, camping with kids can be the perfect summer vacation. To help make your trip as fun as ours was, I’ve done the guesswork for you and created a list of some camping essentials for families so you can have the best experience as possible!
With technology being such an integral part of today’s society, it’s hard to separate yourself from it- which makes it even MORE important to do that every once and a while. Camping is the perfect excuse to leave the iPads at home and sneak in some good old fashioned family fun all while enjoying the great outdoors. Whether you want to camp far away or close to home, certain things will make your experience even more enjoyable. From cooking supplies, to sleeping arrangements Kohl’s camping department has everything you’ll need to make a regular camping experience and turn it into one that your family remembers forever- in a good way!

The most important part of camping, in my opinion, is the tent! Getting the right size and style tent for your family is a personal preference, some families choosing to get one for the adults and a second one for the kiddies, or just sharing one larger one for all of you. Kohl’s has a great selection of larger and smaller tents, so selection isn’t an issue, it’s just the deciding that can be a struggle! Once you choose the right tent, you’ll want to be sure that everyone has their own sleeping bag. Each of my kids has their own sleeping bag for regular sleepovers, so if you get the right one, they can also double for their camping bag as well. Depending on where you are camping and what time of year it is, you want to be sure to get a sleeping bag that is comfortable and also warm. Our favorite sleeping bags are these Kid’s Fleece Sleeping Bags from Columbia. They have a comfort rating down to 40°F (which is great for here in the Northeast!), a polyester shell resists moisture to keep your child dry with a cozy fleece lining and an oxford drawstring carry bags make it easy to pack up and store when it’s not being used. They come in a variety of colors and are perfect for kid’s of all ages. Having an air mattress for everyone can be very beneficial too and can make the difference between a sleepless night and a dream filled evening.
Once the lights get low, it’s important to have the right kind of lighting so no one is bumping into anything! We love these Coleman Sidekick lanterns. They are small enough to be packed away when not in use but powerful enough to light up the whole campsite! They emit 80 lumens on high for up to 7 hours of light or 30 lumens on low for up to 14 hours. They are also water resistant and run on batteries so it’s easy to get more light when you need it. We like to get at least one lantern per kid, so they can each have their “own” to use.
Once your campsite is all set up, the next thing you will probably hear is “I’m hungry!”. I am sure to pack lots of easy to grab snacks and ready to make meals, but if you are camping for a few days, why not try and cook over the campfire? Last week I shared 25 delicious camping recipes for fun meals that you can make for your family, from breakfasts to desserts. If you do decide to try campfire cooking, be sure to grab this Stanley Adventure 13-pc. Prep & Cook Mess Set. It comes with everything you need to make campfire cooking as easy as cooking on the stove at home and packs up all securely when you are done. For serving, save a tree and use this Stansport Enamel Camping Tableware Set instead of paper products. It’s easy to wash and comes with enough pieces for four people- and is also pretty (in my opinion!). To make your mornings smoother, don’t forget to brew up some coffee for mom in dad in this matching enamel 8-Cup Coffee Percolator & Mug Set. They are all enameled stainless steel too so they won’t get all scratched and dinged up and will last you for years.
You don’t want to forget food safety when you are out. Keeping food stored at the right temperature is so important which is why our Stanley 30-quart Adventure Cooler is a must when we go camping. This cooler is deceivingly big inside and can store up to 40 cans and is tall enough to fit a 2-liter bottle. It’s double wall insulation keeps contents cool for up to 4 days- yes 4 DAYS- and it has a convenient leak-proof drain plug and lid so it makes clean up a breeze. It’s perfect enough to fit all of our cold food when we are out so I don’t have to worry about cheese or milk spoiling.
If you are camping with a baby, then you MUST add this Ciao! baby Portable High Chair to your to-get list. This thing is so awesome for not just camping, but for all of the warm months of the year. With this, your little one can eat all of their meals outside with the adults without having mom or dad lug a huge and heavy high chair wherever you go. It folds up like a stadium chair does and can be easily sprayed off with a hose to be cleaned off. It’s not just great for camping, but all of your summer time outside activities (think: picnics in the park, beach days or trips to grandmas house!)

Most of camping is finding fun things to do with your family. One of our favorites is going for a hike and exploring nature. If you are hiking with kids, be sure to carry enough supplies for everyone. Things like water, snacks, first aid kits and a change of clothes are all a necessity. To fit it all, we love these Columbia Daypacks. They are comfortable to wear and fit LOADS of supplies in them. They have lots of pockets and compartments so you can organize your supplies without having to search for them and can even fit a standard sized laptop so it can be used for other times and not just camping. Geocaching is another great family activity to do while camping too, if you haven’t tried it, check out my post on tips and how-tos here!
Another must for camping is creating an area for down time activities. We love this Coleman Instant Canopy. It’s so easy to set up and makes the right amount of shade for relaxing or playing games under. It also it great for sports and the beach so you are sure to get lots of use out of it!
