Summer is here and now is the time to take vacation, whether it be some place close or far, more and more famous are opting drive instead of fly, often to save money. A family road trip can be fun and exciting- you’ve mapped your route, packed your clothes and essential toys. You’ve got plenty to do and some favorite movies geared up, but what about snacks? In my opinion, the right snacks can make or break a road trip- especially with kids. Speaking from experience, it’s better for you to be safe than sorry and pack extra snacks, but the right snacks are key. I have a go-to list of favorite snacks for road trips and wanted to share my very best road trip snacks for kids so you will ready for the best trip yet!
Depending on how far you are traveling, you may want to not only pack snacks, but also mini-meals of sorts. Stopping to get food is always a fine idea, but needing to stop multiple times is not. I like to pack a “cold snack” bag and a “regular snack” bag always making sure to pack extra ice packs for the cold ones in order for them to stay nice and chilled for the duration of the trip. I also like to have a balance of healthy snacks and “treats”, this makes the road trip even more special. I always make sure to either buy things individually wrapped or package them that way before we leave, this makes it SO much easier to dish out the snacks as you drive, and minimizes fighting too.
My kid’s favorite part of these road trips are the special treats I’ll pack. One of my favorite ones are these new Oreo 2-packs. They are the perfect size for a small sweet treat and are individually wrapped, which makes them great for eating on the go! All of my kids just love munching on them as we drive from place to place. I love how big the multi-serving box is too- you get a whopping 18 servings in each one, which is fantastic with three kids! One large box is plenty for they trip and for some treats while we are on the beach, at the amusement park or just wanting a treat for any time of the day. The two cookie serving is just the right amount for everyone so I always pick up a box and toss them into my snack bag before we head out.
So if you are heading out for some summer time fun, here are some more of my favorite go-to road trip snacks for kids!
squeeze apple sauce
chopped up fresh fruit
sliced veggies (like celery, carrot sticks, sliced peppers)
individual bags of dry cereal
sugar-free gum (for ears that need to be popped)
If you are taking a longer trip, you could pack more “meal” like things like homemade lunchables, mac and cheese, wagon wheel pasta or mini meatballs and store them hot in a thermos, just being sure to eat them sooner rather than later. All of these snacks would keep little bellies full and happy so you can get to your final destination without as many temper tantrums!
