Do you have little girls in your life that are Barbie fans like I do? I grew up loving Barbies and was so excited when my girls got bigger and loved them too! Barbie always is on an exciting adventure and this month she has a new movie being released, Barbie and the Secret Door! In this magical, musical adventure, Barbie stars as Alexa, a shy princess who would rather read than perform her royal duties. While walking through the royal garden, Alexa discovers a secret door in her kingdom, much like the one in the book she’s reading! She steps through the door and enters a whimsical land filled with magical creatures and surprises. Alexa meets Romy and Nori, a mermaid and a fairy, who explain that a spoiled ruler named Malucia is trying to take all the magic in the land. To her surprise, Alexa has magical powers in this world, and her new friends are certain that only she can restore magic to their land. Alexa will learn to find the courage to stand up for what’s right and discovers that the power of friendship is far more precious than magic.
I thought the movie sounded wonderful and couldn’t wait for my girls to watch it, and just to make the movie even more special, we decided to throw a Barbie and the Secret Door sleepover!
The girls got new Barbies to play and all were stars from the movie!
They were so excited to hold their dolls and all immediately started brushing and styling their hair. After, we decided to decorate hot pink cupcakes to have as a before the movie treat.
They loved how the color of the frosting matched their new doll’s dresses! Next it was time to watch the movie! All snuggled up in bed, the girls laughed and sang the songs. They loved it so much they requested to watch it again in the morning!
They really loved the story and thought the characters were magical. They loved having their dolls interact as the movie was on, pretending that they were apart of the show. As a parent, I really loved the message it gave. This is one thing that I have always loved about Barbies, is h0w she inspires girls to be brave, independent and adventurous. In the movie, Alexia is shy in the beginning and is afraid to try new things. After she goes on her adventure, she realizes that it’s ok to try new things and jump in two feet first! I think this is a very important message for girls to see. Sure, my girls aren’t princesses, but they can take this message and apply it to their real life- when it comes to friends, school or sports. It’s especially good for the beginning of a new school year when kids are in new classrooms with kids they may or may not know. It shows them that it’s ok to be brave and introduce themselves! And most importantly, it shows them to be themselves.
They couldn’t wait to try out the painting and coloring books the next day and my daughter has already read the Barbie and the Secret Door book a million times! They were even recreating the story the next day in their doll house.
I think that this movie is a great one to add to any families collection- especially if you have yourself a shy girl. This story may just be the thing to help them to break out of that box a bit! We loved it!
I participated in an In-Home Party Activation on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Mattel. I received product samples to facilitate my party and a promotional item to thank me for participating. All opinions, as usual, are my own.
