Keeping a house clean with three kids and a dog is NOT easy. I try and keep ahead of the game by tackling certain things everyday so that way if I don’t have time to deep clean something then at least my house will sort of feel clean. By doing these things everyday my house stays fairly neat and organized and basically clean- yes, of course, I need to spend time each week dusting and deep cleaning bathrooms, but by keeping up with the little things, it feels like less work.
Here are seven things that I do everyday to help keep my house clean:
Make everyone’s bed
Everyday after the kids are off to school I make sure the beds are all made. I usually have the kids “make” them before they leave (unless we are running late) but then I go in and straighten the blankets a bit more. I just think that the whole room feels cleaner when the bed is made.
Clean off the counters
Before the end of the day, I am sure to go around the kitchen and clear off anything that has accumulated throughout the day and put them where they belong. I am not one for clutter anyways and I don’t like “things” taking up space on the counter so I like to put everything in its place: lunch boxes, keys, water bottles- everything goes away. Everything has a place and everything in its place is my mantra.
Wipe all the counters down
Once everything is away, I am sure to wipe down all the counters- especially in the bathroom! I like to wipe up any fingerprints, toothpaste smudges, and crumbs so that way we start the day with fresh, clean counters ready for more smudges and crumbs.
Do all of the dishes
I am not one for leaving dishes in the sink, ever. I always wash all of them after each meal and am sure to wash any remaining glasses or water bottles before I head in for the night. I can’t image waking up to a sink full of dirty dishes!!! Yuck.
Clean up the toys
Here’s one my kids help me with. Ever since my kids were babies I have taught them that once they are done playing with something they clean it up before they move onto the next thing. Now, they don’t always do this on their own, but with some reminding they are usually pretty good at cleaning up their toys, for the most part. Just to be sure we have the toys cleaned, at night before we read stories, everyone helps me pick up any remaining items left out. I usually pull my teacher trick out of my bag and say their “ticket to hear the stories” is to clean up X number of things. This usually gets the bulk of things put away so we can start the next day off with a neat and clean house.
Put away any “piles”
Piles and I don’t get along. I cannot stand piles of mail or papers on my counters- they make me bonkers! Each day I am sure to go though any papers that the kids bring home from school or any mail and sort them right away. Anything I know we don’t need I throw away or recycle. Any important papers I need I pin up on the cork board. Any papers with important dates I write down in my planner and then I can get rid of the papers. Any papers I need to save and file away, I have a holder in my “command center” where I stick them until I can file them away properly later.
Sweep the floor
I sweep everyday. I have to. Between the kids and the dog my floor is covered in dirt, dust, grass and crumbs. I may not have time to mop everyday, but as long as I sweep, my house will just feel clean.
So there you have it. Seven things I will clean everyday to help keep my house mostly clean and neat. So even if I don’t have time to deep clean anything I can rest well knowing that at least everything is put away and in it’s place.
