Thank you to P&G for sponsoring today’s post. All opinions are 100% my own.
Summer break is officially here and my kids are already telling me they are bored. Mine are a little older now, so gone are the days of me trying to fill all of their time with scheduled activities, but I still feel like I am busy all day! With the kids being home more, there are some things that are just necessary to have around to make things easier for you, and these 10 parenting summer break essentials are at the top of my list!
I love having my kids home in the summer, but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that they do make me crazy at times! These items help us to survive the summer so more fun can be had by all.
Lots of Sunblock
No matter where you live, the best accessory you can have on hand for your family is sunblock, and lots of it! I like to begin to stock up early and also try to get into the habit early in the spring of putting sunscreen on before the kids get dressed, and reapplying frequently when we are outdoors, especially when we are at the pool or beach.
Freeze Pops for Days
These are of course, a summer staple in my house! They are easy to open, fun to eat and a great way to cool down on a summer day! Stock up on them while they are on sale so you will have plenty to last all summer!
Large Quantities of Laundry Essentials
I know this may seem strange to ad to the list, but TRUST me, enough laundry and cleaning things are very much essential for the summer! With the kids home more, in and out of the house and playing outside A LOT, you will have way more dirty clothes and dishes than you can imagine. Thankfully, I know I can stock up on my favorites over at Big Lots and save some money too.
Currently you can get large 100 oz. bottles of Tide laundry soap for only $10, which is a steal! In addition, to help get rid of that stinky summer sweat, you can grab bottle of Downy Fabric Softener, sheets and boosters for $4.50 and up. Lastly, don’t forget to grab some Dawn Liquid Detergent and Cascade Dishwasher Detergent for only $6- because unfortunately there is no one to wash the dishes probably besides you. I love how I can stock up on these quality P&G products for a great value everyday at Big Lots, and I never have to wonder if they are in stock or not because they are always there! Check out a Big Lots near you for these great deals, and grab some other fun summer time activities while you are at it!
Simple Outside Activities
With my kids being older, I encourage them to come up with activities to keep them busy, but it’s helpful to have easy options readily available. Besides for plenty of basketballs and soccer balls, it’s fun to have some other activities for the kids to choose from such as family games like Croquet or Badminton. They are fun for the whole family and a great way to spend an evening outside, in addition to getting unplugged as well. I also like to keep an ample supply of squirt guns, chalk and bubbles for easy and cheap summer entertainment.
Plenty of Indoor Activities
In addition to lots of outside stuff for your kids, you will want to be sure you have plenty of indoor actives as well for bad weather days or when your kids just need a break from the sun. Art supplies like paint, paper, crayons, fun pens and markers are an easy way to entertain kids for a bit. I also like to have things like kenetic sand, play dough, board games and puzzles as options too.
A Way to Cool Down
Be it a beach, pool, or a sprinkler- you need to be sure that you have way to have some water fun. We are a few hours to the beach here in PA but do make a few trips each year. Other than that, our main choice of water fun is our pool that we belong to. If either of these aren’t an option for you, consider a blow up pool or slide, or even just some sprinkler attachments you can connect to your backyard for a day of fun!
Plenty of Pool Towels and Swim Suits
This one is a no brainer. No matter where you live, you will need plenty of towels and swim suits for your kiddies! Whether it’s the beach, pool or just the backyard hose- you will want a way to stay cool and have fun in the water. I usually get my kids at least two suits a season, depending on what fits them from the previous year!
I am a huge advocate for summer reading and one of the places we visit early and often in the summer is the local library. We like to get a nice stack of books every week or two to be sure the kids have plenty of books to choose from. Visiting the library is a great way to save money too and a great way to get your kids involved in reading new types of books.
Summer First Aid Kit
I’m sure your family already has a first aid kit on hand, but make sure it’s updated for summer with some kind of itch relief, tweezers for splinter removal, compression bandages, a few ice packs and extra bandaids! We also keep benzocaine swabs in ours for bee stings and plenty of allergy medicines for summertime use since my kids seasonal allergies can be bad. We keep one set of things in the house and one in the car as well.
Travel Games & Activities
Traveling this summer? Whether it’s a short road trip or a longer plane ride, I like to keep a few little puzzle books, a deck of cards, etc with us when we’re out and about. Don’t underestimate the power of an old fashioned activity books or coloring books if you have younger kids or crossword puzzles or word searches for older kids. They can all come in handy if you are in the car or waiting for meals at a restaurant or a flight. Travel game editions of games of our favorite games are always a good idea too for our beach bag or travel bags!
With these summer time essentials, you can be sure you and your kids are having the best summer ever without breaking the bank or tons of planning. Don’t forget to stock up on those daily household and P & G cleaning essentials for cheap at your local Big Lots. More money saved on that means more choices for summer fun!
