Hold the horses, a fashion post? Yes I know I don’t post a lot about fashion or clothes, just since I keep a fairly simple wardrobe and never consider myself high-fashion. Recently, however, I have been trying to dress a little nicer, I guess- and by “nicer” I mean comfortable but without looking frumpy. So in that spirit I wanted to share my 10 essential mom wardrobe pieces for summer, and spring too! These pieces are cute, comfortable, affordable, and ones that I wear day after day.
There is a new trend in fashion called the “capsule” wardrobe, and I don’t claim to know much about it other than (I think!) it’s buying pieces that can be worn multiple ways and with multiple outfits. While I don’t believe I have a capsule wardrobe, I do try and abide by this rule, often choosing pieces that can be worn often an aren’t too flashy. These 10 items are things that every mom should own since they take you out of the yoga pants, even if it’s just for a day!
A good pair of jeans– I honestly only own one! That may seen shocking, but I am not really a jeans person, so one pair is good for me. They are the skinny tapered leg style so they can be worn with sandals, flats and boots.
A cute long dress- A cute long dress can come across as dressy if you add a fancy necklace and wedge sandals, to casual with a cardigan and flip flops. They are comfortable and great for running errands or sitting watching soccer games!
This adorable striped dress is called the Mollie Maxi Dress and is from one of my favorite new online boutiques, Comfy and Chic. This boutique is run by two amazing moms in Texas. Their shop was designed for moms like me in mind, where we have very little time to shop but do want to have some nice pieces in out closets! They they have lots to choose from, but never buy in bulk so they are constantly rotating their selection and always have fresh up-to-date pieces.
Some 3/4 length button up shirts- These are great for dressing up a pair of shorts or capris but still are comfortable, and this is a great way to add in some color to your outfit!
A knee or calf length skirt- Years ago I gave up wearing shorter shorts and now the shortest I get is knee length. I love the look of a flowey calf-length skirt and how it can dress up a plain t-shirt and is often more comfortable than wearing pants!
Some comfortable but cute shorts- The JCrew outlet is my favorite place to get shorts- they have a type of short that doesn’t have buttons and just pulls up, but are made out of nicer materials, like linens, so they are dressier but not too dressy can comfortable for everyday use. I have like 4 pairs of these. Yup.
At least one long cardigan sweater- I love wearing sweaters over my t-shirts, and a cute, thin cardigan is my favorite, but always the long style and not the shorter one, unless I want a dressier look. I have a few in colors that match most of my clothes, like navy and mustard.
A good pair of black leggings- Yes a good pair of black leggings is a must! For every time of year! But invest in a nicer thicker pair or else they will stretch thin in the areas that you DON’T want them stretching in and that is just not a good idea.
A pencil skirt- I just recently started wearing a few of these, and like how they look with a t-shirt or 3/4 length T. Do you see the pattern that I am often wearing clothes without buttons? Yes, comfort is key with me folks.
Some “dressy” t-shirts- I have a slew of regular t-shirts, but it’s nice to have some “dressier” kind, like this cute striped one from Comfy and Chic Boutique called Amelia. It’s like the material of a regular t-shirt but a little longer and the stripes and colored collar makes it a little more fun than you average shirt.
A t-shirt dress- I love a cute and stretchy t-shirt dress! Like the long dress, it can be dressed up or down and is great for running errands and playing with kids. Since these are a little tighter, get a good quality stretchy one that will be more forgiving in the areas you need it.
So add in some variety of shoes (flats, flip flops, a few wedge sandals and my Hunter rain boots), a sweatshirt and rain jacket, at least one baseball cap and my bathing suit, of course- and you have my whole spring/summer wardrobe! See, I am a simple girl, but do love to get dressed up when I can so I do have a few fancier spring dresses waiting in the wings for a date night. If you love the two pieces I shared today, be sure to check out Comfy and Chic Boutique to snag them and see all of their other pretty pieces!
